A long time ago on a cruise ship far, far away, as the cruise came to an end, the cruisers at our dinner table gave everyone little mementos of the cruise. Not to be outdone, I also got a small keepsake for everyone. Being the frugal person that I am, I didn’t spend a lot of money on them. I walked the shore and got a small rock for everyone. I told everyone that every time they looked at that rock, they would think of me.
A year went by and we were again cruising with the same group. Before long, everyone was telling me about where they kept their stones. I had quite frankly forgotten about them. I won’t mention names, but the bingo player of the group started telling me that I had to find the perfect “rock” so she would have a memory of the cruise. Needless to say, every time I went ashore, I searched for the perfect memento. Finally, I found a brick that had been broken almost perfectly in half. After a hassle getting it aboard the ship, I presented it for what I thought would be a good joke.
Imagine my surprise when I later found out that she had to risk paying an overweight airline baggage charge because she was keeping the brick. That got me to thinking, why do people keep the oddest things? There is only one answer.
Who the hell knows?
